SUSIE MARTIN OBITUARY (Published in Salt Lake Tribune )

Susie Smith Martin
03/16/1941 ~ 05/14/2022

Salt Lake City, Utah—Our mom was named Sharon Lynn Smith, but her sisters immediately renamed her Susie and it stuck for 81 years. Born in Ogden, UT she grew up in the Yalecrest neighborhood of SLC, UT where she lived most of her life. She attended Uintah Elementary, East High School & the University of Utah where she earned her degree in elementary education and was active in the Chi Omega sorority enjoying reunions for many years. After a semester at BYU Hawaii she returned to Utah where she met and married De Wayne Martin. Together they had 3 kids (names removed for privacy). After their divorce our mom worked tirelessly to provide for us. She later met Joe Shool who was an amazing stepfather and grandpa and her loving companion until his death. Shortly after his death Susie was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. We feel lucky to have been able to keep her in her home and care for her together as a family until her death. Her happy place was gardening and planting beautiful flowers in her yard. Susie spent many years in the Yalecrest ward and later several years at the Unitarian Church. She loved the feeling of community in both. When she met someone new with a story to tell she couldn't wait to share their story with us. When she could no longer remember what she had heard just hours before, she would still know she had enjoyed being there and listening to Reverend Goldsmith. One of Susie's greatest joys was spending time with her grandkids (names removed for privacy). She bought a season pass to Hogle Zoo every year for a long time and would take any and all of them to explore. She loved being a grandma. Susie's body was donated to the U of U body donor program, as was her wish. Her hope was that they find a cure for Alzheimer's. Susie was happy, sweet and kind. She always had a genuine smile on her face. She always had a kind word or a compliment for you. She was grateful for everything you did for her and always thanked you for even the smallest thing. We would like to thank Intermountain Hospice for the care they gave our mom, especially her nurse Tina. There will be a celebration of life June 5th 2022 from 5 to 7pm at 1832 Hubbard Ave. Please go to Legacy.com and leave a memory about Susie. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity.
