Carlos Dean Murphy, 89, died June 25, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born July 28, 1932, in Dighton, to John and Ella (Walters) Murphy, the youngest of 12 children.

Carlos graduated from Dighton High School in 1950 and received his bachelor's degree in business and master's degree in economics from Fort Hays State University. He served in the United States Navy from 1952-1956. A Hutchinson resident since 1963, Carlos was a vocational rehabilitation counselor for SRS for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. He was named Counselor of the Year and Regional Counselor of the Year for the State of Kansas. Carlos loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed playing cards, especially Texas Hold 'Em. Carlos was a member of Park Place Christian Church, a lifetime member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, and a member of the city horseshoe league and was instrumental in organizing the pits at Rice Park. He also worked at the Kansas State Fair every year for 25 years and volunteered at the NJCAA basketball tournament for 40 years.

On June 15, 1958, Carlos married Barbara L. Hamby, in Hays. They shared 64 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: his sons, Shannon Murphy of Hutchinson, Scott Murphy and his wife Dr. Marieke Wolfe of Wichita; daughter-in-law, Jo Murphy of Overland Park; grandsons, Kyle Murphy, Sean Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Nigel Murphy, Seamus Murphy and fiancé Chenin Wilson; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, son, Kelly Murphy (who died in 2020); and 11 siblings.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Park Place Christian Church, 2600 N. Adams, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. David Dubovich officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022, in Dighton City Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Please dress casually.
