Steven Gardner Foley, 78, of Daleville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born on July 8, 1942 in the Seawright area of Augusta County. He was the son of Harold Lee Foley and Naomi Ethel Allen Foley, both deceased. He was born at the home of his paternal grandmother, Dora Thorn Miller.

He graduated from Middle River High School (1959) and attended Ferrum Junior College. He completed his B.A. at Lynchburg College (1963), and his M.Ed. in counselor education from the University of Virginia (1970). He taught American history at Amherst County High School (1964 to 1970). The remainder of his career was in Roanoke County Schools as a counselor and guidance coordinator at William Byrd High School, Northside High and Middle Schools, and retired from William Byrd Middle School in 1998. He was the timekeeper for both the boys and girls basketball games at William Byrd High School for about 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Gail; three children, Christopher Ryan Foley and his wife, Dottie, of West Chester, Pa., David Allen Foley of Roanoke, and stepson, Josh Kelly Overbay and his wife, Emily of Rowayton, Conn. Special grandchildren are John Gardner Foley, Emma Ann Foley; Hayes Griffith Overbay, Blake Thornburgh Overbay, and Anne Louise Overbay.

He enjoyed golf, especially the trips to Myrtle Beach in January and his Blue Hills Tuesday/Thursday foursome, Tom, Otis, and Paul. He collected antiques and had an extensive collection of Heisey glass. He was an original member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Vinton, Va.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers/plants, memorial gifts may be made to the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame Scholarship Program, "In Memory of Steve Foley," P.O. Box 13253, Roanoke, VA 24032-3253.
