Richard Harris, age 90, of Rockford, passed away peacefully early on Friday, March 18, 2022.
He proudly served as an aircraft electrician on the USS Bon Homme Richard with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Dr. Harris was passionate about education and taught the technical arts for many years, beginning with Hialeah High School, Miami-Dade Community College, Columbus Technical Institute, and ultimately at Ferris State University as a professor of trade-technical teacher education. He enjoyed camping with his family, working in his woodshop designing and making furniture, and creating beautiful stained-glass lamps and other artful objects. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye football fan. He enjoyed having dinner and conversation with his many friends and colleagues. He was kind, patient, and generous. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, JoAnn; children: Cindy and Steven Hornby, Rich and Rhonda Harris; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jason) Boon, Michael (Jennifer) Lewis, Sarah (Nathaniel) Johnston, Ryan (Susan) Hornby, Melody (Mitchell) Ross, Tyler Harris, Patrick (Bridgett) Harris, Austin Pardo, Jesse Pardo, 16 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St. NE, Grand Rapids with Rev. Christopher Roe officiating. Burial will be held at Highland View Cemetery, Big Rapids, Michigan.
