Gene L. Gilbert, 27, of 28 Nebraska St. was fatally injured when the car in which he was a passanger struck two utility poles and over turned on Eddy Street near Nebraska Street at 1:15 a.m.
In the fatal accident in Providence, police identified the driver of the car in which Mr. Gilbert was riding as Gary T. Swaida, 22, of 215 Public St, and also of New Windsor , N.Y.. He was treated for a broken little finger on his left hand at Rhode Island Hospital.
Mr. Gilbert died at 6:45 a.m. in Rhode Island Hospital of a fractured skull, a deep cut on the brain and body injuries.
Police said the car was going south on Eddy Street when it veered to the left of the street. The left front fender hit a utility pole in front of 1050 Eddy St. and the car continued for 189 feet until it went into a spin and hit a pole in front of 1064 Eddy-just past Nebraska Street-broadside.
The pole was broken off at the base and the car spun counter clockwise and rolled over.
He was born Nov. 1, 1937, in Providence , a son of Mrs. Evelyn (Millard) Gilbert and the late Leonidas Gilbert.
Besides his mother, survivors include a sister, Mrs. Joan Walsh of Warwick; a brother, Frederick Gilbert of Providence , and his grandmother, Mrs. Emily Millard, with whom he lived.
Funeral servics will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Moffett Funeral Chapal, 92 Beach Ave, Warwick. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park.
