Leslie R. Roberts, Sr.
April 7, 1935 - June 23, 2022

Leslie R. Roberts, Sr. departed this life peacefully on June 23, 2022 at his home in Wilmington, Delaware. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on April 7, 1935 to the late Chester H. and Alma B. Roberts. He attended elementary school in Terre Haute before moving to Wilmington in the 1940's. He was a proud graduate of the historic Howard High School class of 1954.

While in high school, Les participated in the co-op program that involved Carver Tech and Howard High. During his sophomore and junior years he was in the cooperative education program. He worked half days for two local decorating businesses while attending school. He learned at an early age how to sew watching and learning from his grandmother. He was employed by a local decorating business shortly after graduating from high school. His lifelong dream was to be a business owner. In September of 1975, Les became the proud owner and operator of Les Roberts Decorators for more than 45 years. Over the years, Les provided custom window treatment and furniture to many households and businesses in the tri-state area and beyond.

Les always had a very strong faith in God as well as a commitment to the church. In the early 1940's, his family had to return to Richmond, Indiana from Wilmington to help care for his aunt. While there he tried to serve as an acolyte where the congregation was majority white. Sadly, he was denied the opportunity WHY he would have drunk from the chalice before the main benefactor of the congregation who was white. The good news, that did not deter him. After returning to Wilmington, in the late 1940's, he started attending St. Matthew's Episcopal church where he later became confirmed. It was at St. Matthew's where he experienced his dream of serving as an acolyte and continued serving until well into his 80's. In the 1990's Les was instrumental in the creation of the very special combined ministries that formed the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew. There he continued his longstanding membership and became a eucharistic lay minister. Les believed in the clarion call put forth by Dr. King to the church to do something about the racial problem. That said, the founding, mission, vision and success of the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew was a vital and important call to him.

Les was predeceased by his parents, Chester H. and Alma B. Roberts; brothers David and Chester P. (Beatrice). He leaves to celebrate his life, Jacqueline D. Roberts his devoted wife of 64 wonderful years, children Michele Roberts, Leslie R. Roberts, Jr (Vivian) and Carmen R. Thomas (Guy). Brother Thomas E. Roberts Sr. and sister Paulyne R. Webster. Grandchildren, nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
