Daniel (Danny, Dan) Jacob Alter passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022, a day on which he celebrated both Good Friday and Passover. He was born in The Bronx, NY in 1936 to Morris and Sophie Alter. His parents immigrated to the United States from Poland and Austria in 1931, a few years before the Nazis occupied their village of Zablotów, Austria. All immediate family members, cousins, aunts, and uncles of his parents were sent to Auschwitz. No one survived. He became close with his mother's cousins Nat and Sara Goldhammer, who lived near him in The Bronx.
Dan was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New York Football Giants. He grew up near Yankee Stadium and enjoyed watching some of the greatest baseball players of all time. He was a season ticket holder for the New York Football Giants and watched the team play at Yankee Stadium. Dan played football in high school and earned the nickname "Crusher".
He graduated from The College of the City of New York with a B.A. in history and a minor in economics. Soon after college, he started a long career working as an accountant with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He received the Albert Gallatin award for his years of service upon retirement in 2009.
Dan met his wife Nelly Alter, née Escobar, during a ski trip in Upstate New York while taking beginner ski lessons. They married in 1970, lived in New York City and later moved with their infant daughter to East Windsor, NJ in 1972. He enjoyed living and raising his family in the tight-knit community of Twin Rivers and played with the adult men's softball league for a few years.
Dan attended church at the Nassau Christian Center in Princeton, NJ with his family and volunteered his time at different positions. He had a near death experience that led him to his Christian faith. He celebrated both his Jewish culture and holidays as well as those of the Christian faith.
He enjoyed traveling, attending family get togethers, dining at Hibachi restaurants, talking politics, and telling jokes. He lived the past two years at Brandywine in Princeton, NJ where he participated in many activities and led Karaoke every Friday.
Dan is predeceased by his wife Nelly, his brother-in-law Francisco Escobar, and his sisters-in-law Gloria Castro, Maria Escobar, and Sophia Moreno. He is survived by his daughters Sonja Michelle Alter and Jennifer Alter O'Sheal, son-in-law Jon O'Sheal, and he was a proud papa to Julianna, Jacob, and Jordan O'Sheal. He enjoyed spending time during the holidays with his Colombian family that included Nelly's siblings and 25 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to donate in his honor to a relief organization that provides aid to the people of Ukraine. Zablotów, the town that Dan's family came from was once part of the Austrian/Polish empire and now is in present day Ukraine.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2022 from 10-11am with a service at 11am at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton, NJ 08542. Burial will follow in Brainerd Cemetery, Cranbury, NJ.
