James E. Abel, 93, a resident at Heath Village in Hackettstown, NJ, died on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Hackettstown Hospital. Known to his friends as 'Jim' or 'Jimmy,' he was a firm believer in community service. After his retirement from Picatinny Arsenal as a research chemist, he devoted much of his time to serving his community. From 1982 to 1988 he served as a trustee at Lake Mohawk Country Club, the place that he loved dearly and lived for 50 years until moving to Heath Village in 2004.

Because Jim was deeply interested in education, he sought to serve on education boards. He was President of both the Sparta Board of Education and the Sussex County Board Association. He was on the Advisory Committee to the Sussex County Vocational and Technical Board, and served as Secretary to the Sparta Juvenile Conference Committee. Besides all these accomplishments, he was also President of the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, Chairman of the Sparta Industrial Development Committee and a member of the Sparta Elks.

Educated at Montclair High School and Cornell University College of Agriculture, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, and his master's degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Jim's wife, Margaret, predeceased him in 1968.

His biography is listed in 'Who's Who in the East' and in 'American Men and Women of Science.' He will be missed by his golf buddies at Newton Country Club and New Bern, by his fellow worshippers at the Presbyterian Church of Sparta, by his cronies at Sheridan's Lodge, and by his friends who knew him to be a good friend and a great teller of stories which seemed to get funnier with each telling. So wherever all the friends of Jimmy Abel may be, hoist a glass to him have a piece of apple pie and toast to a life well lived! And as Jimmy would say, 'Keep smiling.'

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal services. Instead, his friends are invited to join in a celebration of his life beginning at Sheridan's Lodge, 631 Limecrest Road, Andover, NJ.
