He then enlisted in the US Army from 1971-1973, where he also earned an honorable discharge. This path took him to earn several management positions, managing a series of businesses, he managed the Board Room, the Famous Lounge, The Living Room. He then joined the Masonic Lodge where he became a 3rd Degree Mason.
He then went on to open his own business called T-Lees Lounge in Lawton, Oklahoma, he ran that business for several years, where he soon retired.
In 1982, he met Mary Hill who became his partner in life, where they raised 3 sons Kitrell A. Hill, Thomas Lee Smith, and Casey Smith. What made Tommy Unique was the way that he loved his family. He loved being a husband, father, uncle, and most of all a grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a great friend, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and military veteran, the rock of the family. All that knew him loved him, he never met a stranger. His legacy will forever live on, our lives will never be the same, he will be forever missed, his humor, his smile. Just the kindness that he brought to everyone when he walked in the room.
