Dale Smith
Age 78, passed away in the presence of loved ones on June 23, 2022. Born June 12, 1944, in Elmira, NY, to Kenneth and Martha Shappee Smith Sr. he lived his life in the community he loved. It's here that he met his wife of 54 years, Margaret (Peg) McDermott and had three beautiful daughters, Tracy Mack, Tina (Dean) Kelly and Tonia McCormick.
Without question, Dale's pride and joy was his family. Moments spent with them are what made each day a little brighter. His grandchildren, Mitchell, Madi, Alyssa, Kailey, Zach and his great-granddaughter Kyliee brought him a great deal of both love and laughter.
While he will be remembered as an incredible family man, he will also be remembered for his service with the U.S. Army and his career with the Horseheads Central School District. Dale put forth great effort in anything that came his way be it his career, maintaining his lawn or even decorating for Christmas. He had great attention to detail and excelled in a multitude of areas.
Dale is predeceased by his father and mother Kenneth and Martha Shappee Smith Sr., brothers Kenneth (Bea) Smith Jr. and Duane (Barb) Smith, and grandmother Lillian. In addition to his wife, daughters and grandchildren, Dale is survived by his brothers Claude (Annie) Smith, Ben (Barb) Smith and Joe (Karen) Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
On behalf of Dale's family, we'd like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Elcor. Specifically, our new found family, Melissa, Jill, Mary, Topaz, Sam, Lynda, Sheleeta, Elaine, Denise, Claire, Jodi, Sheena, Super-Dan, Veronica, Victoria, Jess, Hayley and Vinny. We could not and would not have been able to get through this time without your help. What was sure to be one of our most challenging experiences as a family, you brought ease to.
Family and friends are invited to Sullivan's Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St., Horseheads, NY, on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 from 4PM – 7PM; funeral service immediately following. He will be laid to rest at Woodlawn National Cemetery with military honors at the convenience of family.
