Canton – Mary Madeline Blaylock Shepherd, blessed with 84 years of a wonderful and full life, entered into her glorious place in Heaven on Sunday, June 19, 2022.

Madeline's life journey began April 25, 1938, in Haywood County, NC. To those who knew Madeline she was like an angel here on earth. Her heart was always filled with love and concern for others and if you had the privilege of knowing her, she remained your friend forever. Madeline was a dedicated Navy military wife and was given the opportunity to travel and make their home all across the country with her husband who was stationed throughout the United States. As their lives took a slower path following military retirement, they chose to return to the mountains of Western North Carolina in 1975 to make their home in Canton where Madeline had been born and raised. She loved her mountain heritage and history and often enjoyed sharing memories with family, friends and neighbors. Madeline was a joy and a delight to everyone and she touched the lives of so many –that will never ever forget her. She was a lady of strong faith and a devoted member of Long's United Methodist Church on Coffee Branch Road, which was just a short walk from her lovely home. She cherished her church and in her own words, "I have served on 5 committees and I have been blessed to help with anything else." Her long standing service on the Pastor Parish Relations Committee of the church was deeply important to Madeline. She enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and lovely flowers and Madeline was also a wonderful cook. Anyone who visited the Shepherd home was welcomed by Madeline with open arms and always left with precious memories. As in the words of the old hymn, Precious Memories – Precious Memories, unseen angels sent from somewhere to my soul, How they linger, ever near me and the sacred past unfolds…..

We shall each hold onto the memory of Mary Madeline Blaylock Shepherd forever.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Blaylock and her mother, Trudy Mason Blaylock McDade; her loving husband of 65 years, Everett Donald Shepherd who passed away in 2019; a sister, Mona Jeffcoat; her brothers, Cody Blaylock and Mike McDade.

Surviving are her daughter, Donna Shepherd of New York, NY; a grandson, Ezra Weitzman of New York, NY; a granddaughter, Zelda Weitzman of New York, NY; a close friend who was loved as a grandson, Loyd Futral of Canton; two special cousins, Ronnie Mason of Clyde and Eddie Singleton of Waynesville; a niece, Susan Rodgers of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Cathi McDade of the state of Washington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Peggy Shepherd and Mack and Rose Shepherd; special friends, Becky Rathburn and Melissa Walden; and also Madeline's beloved cat "Chief".
