Olympic Champion. As an Olympic speed skater, she won one gold medal in 1972 at the Sapporo, Japan Olympics in the 3000 m race and a silver medal in speed skating at the same Olympics in the 1500 m race. In the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France she brought home two bronze medals. In the World Allround Speed Skating Championships for Women she won two gold medals (1967, 1968), four silver medals (1969 to 1972) and two bronze (1965, 1966). During her career she held nine world records and twenty-seven Dutch records. She was chosen the Dutch Sportswoman of the Year in 1967.
