In September 1857, she married Almiron (or Elmiron) Adams (son of Ashley Adams) in Independence, Iowa. They had four children together:
Edward Adams (b. 1858)
James A. Adams (b. 1862, d. 1944)
Ashley Adams (b. 1865)
Minnie Adams (b. 1867)
Almiran Adams took ill and died in Allensville Missouri in 1868 of "quick consumption". His death was witnessed by James Adams and Samuel Brandt.
Maria married Cyrus Lyon on December 28, 1871 at the residence of Nimrod M. Lowe in Moscow, Iowa. Together they had two children:
Cyrus Field Lyon (b. 1872, d. 1948).
Charles Browning Lyon (b. 1875, d. 1876).
After her husband died in 1889, it is reported that Maria was committed to a 'nursing home' in her later years. Her son Cyrus was eventually given guardianship because she was said to have suffered from severe dementia. Family lore states that Maria chased her daughter Minnie with an axe, and also wrapped up a lamp with a blanket like a baby and took it to bed with her.
Maria died at at Mercy Hospital, Davenport, Iowa on October 19, 1917 of myocarditis. Her funeral was at Halligans in Davenport, then she was transported to and buried in Moscow, Iowa after a service at the Moscow Methodist Church.
