Olympic Champion. He was an Estonian high jumper who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1972 Munich Olympics and won the gold medal. He also competed in the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1971 in Sofia winning the silver medal and in 1972 in Grenoble winning the bronze. His father was Aadu Tarmak, who was the Soviet champion in the discus throw in 1943–44. After retiring from the sport he returns to school and graduated in economics from the Saint Petersburg State University. He later founded an investment company, Broker Baltic AS. He remained involved with sports and between 2001 and 2012 headed the sports club Kompass Tallinn.
