Civil War Union Army Officer. Mustered in as a Private in Company B, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry in April 18, 1861, he went on to serve the entire length of the war. Promoted to Corporal in March 1, 1863, he would re-enlist at the end of the year (December 28, 1863). When the original enlistments of the 1st New Jersey expired in June of 1864, he and the rest of the re-enlistees and recruits were consolidated into the 1st New Jersey Veterans Battalion, with Cornelius Abrahams being mustered into Company A. He took part in his unit's participation in the October 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, and in the final Union assaults on Confederate positions at Petersburg, Virginia in April 1865. After the surrender of General Robert E. Lee's forces at Appomattox Court House, he was promoted to Sergeant in Company A (April 18, 1861). On May 11, 1865 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, filling the vacancy caused by the promotion of Frederick W. Sowerby, completing his rise from mere Private to officer. He was honorably discharged on June 29, 1865, being one of only a handful of soldiers, both officers and enlisted, from the original muster roll of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry to serve and survive through the whole conflict.
