"As long as we can love each other and remember the feeling of love we had, we can die without ever really going away. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on – in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were there."

Morrie Schwartz

The above lines capture the essence of spirit for which Thomas Clayton Nelson will be remembered. "Tom" as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was born October 3, 1950, to the union of Leon Clayton Nelson and Eunice (Booker) Nelson in Springfield Garden, New York. On June 11, 2022, he departed this life in Cincinnati, Ohio after an extended illness.

Tom's life was characterized by simplicity and purpose. The values that governed his interactions with others modeled the principles embraced by his family, an unwavering faith in God, a deep devotion to family and friends, a high regard for commitment and service, and a sincere belief in education and personal achievement. He possessed a creative energy that manifested itself in any activity he endeavored, whether it involved engaging his students in the wonders of scientific inquiry, building an enviable collection of Marvel Comic Books, or action figures. His warm, friendly demeanor and compassionate concern for others made an indelible imprint on the hearts of those whom he encountered as he journeyed through life.

At an early age, Tom became affiliated with the Community Baptist Church in Jamaica Queens, New York. It was at the Community Baptist Church that the foundation of the religious convictions that served as a moral barometer for his interactions with others was laid. When he relocated to Cincinnati, OH, Tom joined the Tri-County Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Bryan McManus. He often volunteered to assist the ushers with the collection of tithes and offerings.

Tom received his early educational training in the New York Public School System. Although he did well in all subjects, he especially enjoyed his science classes and the athletics program. Upon graduating from high school, he pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at New York University, completing the degree requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in Science Education and a Master of Arts in Middle Grades Science. In the early 1970's, Tom began a teaching career which spanned four decades of service, twenty years with the New York City Public Schools System and twenty years with the Northwest School District in Cincinnati, Ohio. After retirement, Tom continued to work with students as a wrestling coach for the Winton Woods School District in Forest Park, Ohio. Through his dedication and inspiration, Tom was able to help students develop an enlightened awareness of their own potential and move forward confidently in society to achieve their dreams.

Surviving his loss and cherishing his memory are his devoted mother, Mrs. Eunice Booker Nelson, Cincinnati, OH, Mr. Clark Douglas Lucky, Evans, GA, Curtis Derrick (Andrea) Lucky; Brianah Lucky, Waco, TX; Cameron Lucky, Plymouth, MN; Angela Mendoza, Victor Mendoza, Milledgeville, GA; Michael Monroe (Alana), Khalil Monroe, Renton, WA; Yazmine Monroe, Milledgeville, GA; Evita Willis (Christopher); Milledgeville, GA; Brandon (Kimberly) Johnson and Ayden Johnson of McDonough, GA; Micah (Katrina) Lucky and Kayla Lucky of Rock Hill, SC; Jonathan Lucky of London, England; Lauana Lucky of Jacksonville, FL along with a host of nieces, nephews extended relatives and friends. www.springgrove.org
