William was known as an intelligent player, renowned for his strength in the tackle, he was on the Chelsea staff for eight years. While primarily a defensive half-back, his clever use of the ball out of defence started many attacks.
He was transferred to Heart of Midlothian in Dec 1935 and was later appointed player-manager of Rhyl FC.
He was a welcome guest at the Chelsea FA Cup final banquet in 1967.
