From Crofts-Crow Funeral Home:

Elizabeth Omalee Sublett of Johnson City died on June 20, 2022 from complications after a fall in her home on June 13. For members of the family, Elizabeth was the spark and inspiration that carried them through life's ups and downs; to countless friends and neighbors, she was a fountain of love, kindness, and charity. She was united in death with her husband, the love of her life, Jesse "Jake" Sublett Jr., who passed away in 2005.

Elizabeth is survived by sisters Josephine Alberthal and Florine Bruns, both of Fredericksburg. Ruby Duecker, her beloved sister-in-law, resides in Houston. She was preceded in death by sister Winona Davis and brothers Reinhard and Marcus. Children were a constant source of pride and joy for Elizabeth. She leaves two sons and one daughter. James Sublett and spouse Diane reside in Okeene, Oklahoma; Jesse Sublett and wife Lois live in Los Angeles, California; and Kathryn Woods and husband Robert reside in Richland Hill, Georgia. The family's monumental loss is shared by seven grandchildren, Jeff, Jay, Amie, and Dashiell Sublett, Audrey Johnson, Robert Woods, and Roberta DeLoach; and three great-grandchildren, Bruce, Nora, and George. In addition, Elizabeth had been eagerly anticipating the arrival of additional great-grandchildren.

A child of the Texas Hill Country, Elizabeth was born on March 16, 1931 in Gillespie County to Walter and Katie Duecker. The Dueckers lived on a small family farm in the rugged cedar breaks and rock-strewn pastures near Stonewall, not far from the Lyndon B. Johnson ranch. Elizabeth had nine years of education at little Nebgen community schoolhouse, and surmounted that with an eager, curious mind and uniquely generous spirit. She believed in tolerance and acceptance and most of all, kindness.

A dance at Nebgen School was the setting for Elizabeth and Jake's first meeting. They were introduced by Nora Sublett, wife of Jake's brother Ray. "It was love at first sight," Elizabeth said. At the time, Jake didn't dance, so their first dates were movies and rodeos. She was sitting in Jake's lap at a drive-in movie, she said, when he proposed to her. They were married July 16, 1950, and 33 years later, at age 60, Jake finally learned to dance. Dancing together, in addition to traveling throughout the Southwest and Rocky Mountains, became a cherished part of their lives.

Elizabeth looked forward to her daily mail. She never owned a computer, never had cable TV, but her telephones were constantly buzzing with calls from her network of relatives, friends, neighbors, and helpers. Her cards and letters showed off remarkable penmanship and erudition, stuffed inside envelopes studded with "Jesus Loves You" stickers. And she did love to talk. A huddle amongst the Duecker girls would ring with a delirious, operatic wall of sound as they conversed (in early years, in German) about family doings, gossip, politics, medical conditions, and other commentary, generally without punctuation, a formidable phenomenon to witness.

Elizabeth and Jake's lives were always buoyed by their faith in God and the fellowship of their church. Long-time members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonewall, in later years they joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Blanco. More importantly, however, they embodied the spirit of the parable of the Good Samaritan, tirelessly working to provide assistance and care to countless friends and neighbors in need. In Elizabeth's later years, such kindnesses were repaid by a large network of relations, friends, and strangers—people who, more often than not, found themselves enriched by the experience of knowing her.

Visitation will be 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Friday, June 24, 2022 at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City, TX where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday morning with Rev. Patrick Welton officiating. Interment will follow in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Stonewall, TX.
