Charlene Nichols King, age 91, of Tavares passed into the arms of her Lord on Monday, December 20, 2021.
She was born December 10, 1930 in Umatilla, FL to the late Jim and Thelma Nichols. Charlene grew up in Tavares and married her high school sweetheart, Jack Worth King, Jr., following graduation from Tavares High in 1949. Jack's employment with the Florida Highway Patrol meant the family setting up house in a variety of locations including Hilliard, Lake City, Orlando, Miami, and Tallahassee, but always returning to Tavares for vacations and family reunions. Tavares became their permanent home in 1974.
Church and family meant everything to Charlene. As a child she received awards for twelve years of perfect attendance at Sunday School and that devotion continued as she served as choir member, women's missionary union member, Sunday School teacher, vacation bible school leader, and general "pillar" of her church community.
Strikingly beautiful, and an angel on earth to those who knew her, she was exceedingly generous, from simply lending a helping hand to those in need, to providing food and shelter for those less fortunate.
Charlene's many accomplishments, included many years as a Real Estate Broker and owner of Lake County Realty, landlord of the Tavares Inn Apartments, Tavares "Woman of the Year" in 1997, President of the Lake County Historical Society, Governor of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter and other positions of service to her beloved Tavares community.
An athlete all of her life, she once jumped into a water-filled canal in Miami to successfully rescue a mother and child who were floundering. Charlene enjoyed nothing more than a good game of tennis in the mornings and an afternoon coffee with her beloved brother and sisters.
Skilled at photography, and with her ever present camera in hand, she volunteered her photography for many organizations but especially enjoyed taking pictures of family members.
Charlene adored animals and her house became haven to many a stray or cast-off who subsequently enjoyed a life of pampering.
She is remembered by her family as a selfless, loving wife and mother, and dedicated Christian.
Charlene is predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Jack King of Tavares; brother, James Alvin Nichols; and sisters, Eleanor Nichols Holland, and Frances Nichols Gardner. She leaves behind daughters, Ann King Turley of Astor, Tammie King Rikansrud of Palm Coast; and son, Mark Alvin King of Ider, AL; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
