THOMAS E. OSWALD, 63, of rural Cleghorn, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday evening, June 16, 2022.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 23rd at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Father Dan Rupp will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty Township Cemetery at rural Meriden, Iowa. Public visitation with the family present will be on Wednesday, June 22nd from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. He was born on April 11, 1959 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Stanley and Sally Oswald. He was raised on the farm north of Cleghorn and graduated from Meriden-Cleghorn High School in 1977. He went to Iowa State University and obtained his Bachelors of Science Degree with distinction. He later also earned his Masters of Agriculture from ISU.
In 1988, he was riding his bicycle across Iowa on RAGBRAI when he met his wife, Susanne Dols, on an overnight stop in Des Moines. Tom married his city girl two years later on August 11,1990 in Des Moines. They made their home on the farm in Cleghorn, where they raised soybeans and corn.
He was Past President of the Cherokee County Farm Bureau. Tom was a Cherokee County Soil Commissioner for many years and was on the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce Agri-Business Committee for even longer. He has served his fellow soybean farmers for over 20 years, first on the county level and then as a Director on the Iowa Soybean Association board, where he was President in 2014-15. He was currently serving on the United Soybean Board and for the last several years on their Executive Committee. Tom would talk to anyone about soybeans, especially soybean research which was his passion, "you have to grow the bean to sell the bean''. He was a dedicated no till farmer - he was "NoTillTom". Conservation practices were very important to him and he was always willing to talk to anyone who was interested in learning more about it.
Though his passion was farming, Tom enjoyed learning new things and meeting new people. He has friends from far and wide. His inquisitive mind was always full of questions. He enjoyed traveling with Susanne. They had been all over the world together but maybe the favorite destination was a peaceful mountain hiking trail, usually in one of our beautiful National Parks.
Tom is survived by his wife, Susanne, of Cleghorn; his sisters, Julie (Bruce) Hiller of Cherokee, Breta (Bill) Skinner of Berthoud, Colorado and his brother Jim (Stephanie) of Remsen; his mother-in-law, Anna Dols; brothers-in-law, Joe (Anne) Dols and Mike Dols all of Des Moines and Anthony Dols of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; his sisters-in-law, Jean Dols of Houston, Texas and Mary (Frank) DeMarco of Clive; twelve nieces and nephews and nine great nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Fraser.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Herbert F. Dols and his brother-in-law, Stephen Dols.
