Gladys Cleora Lohr:
Gladys Cleora Lohr was born May 24, 1901, at the family farm home in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, three miles east of Gary, South Dakota. She was the eldest daughter of Lester E. and Nellie May Thomas and had seven brothers and sisters. She grew up on the farm, went through the eighth grade in a nearby one room country school, and then attended and graduated from the high school in Canby, Minnesota. After high school she worked for a time as a bookkeeper in a bank in Clear Lake, South Dakota.
On September 23, 1925, Gladys married Earl L. Lohr in a ceremony at her parents' farm home. Shortly after their marriage the couple established residence in Gary, where Gladys lived until the final year of her life, which she spent with her daughter, Irene, in Monticello, Minnesota. Gladys passed away at her daughter's home on January 5, 1984 after a long illness.
Gladys worked with her husband in the Gary Exchange during the latter part of the 1930s and early 1940s. After Earl was successful in organizing he Gary State Bank and it commenced business on January 2, 1945, Gladys worked as a bookkeeper in that bank. She continued that work for many years after her husband died in an auto accident in 1951.
Gladys and Earl had two children, George, born in 1931, and Irene, born in 1936. Both children survived her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and seven brothers and sisters.
Gladys was a member of the united Methodist Church in Gary and was a long-time member of the Arbor Rebekah Lodge in Gary. She was also active in the senior citizens group in the Gary Community.
