Mildred returned to college only after her youngest child started school and diligently worked toward her goal of becoming a schoolteacher while always making sure that she was there first and foremost for her family. She ultimately received her master's degree in education and taught math at Baytown Junior School for twenty years. She was a good teacher—firm but fair—and many of her students still remember her fondly. To the end she encouraged those around her to follow their own educational goals and achieve their dreams. In 1988 Mildred retired from Goose Creek Consolidated to enjoy "the good life" with Jim and the joys of being grandmother to Kyle and Craig and eventually Granny to the great grandkids. A devoted member of First Baptist Church she attended services there until her physical condition kept her at home.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim and many of her family members and friends. She is survived by her sister Blanche Fraser of Clear Lake; her daughters Cindy Bowen (husband Jim) of Fredericksburg, and Nancy Smith (husband Leon) of Baytown; her grandsons Kyle Smith (wife Melissa) of Austin and Craig Smith (wife Katie) of Deer Park; and her beloved great grandchildren Michael, Craig "Tony", Jayce and Madison Smith all of Deer Park.
The family would like to recognize her special ladies with Visiting Angels who made her final years spent at home possible and the wonderful nursing staff at Houston Methodist Hospital Baytown who took such magnificent care of her during her final days.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm, Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2444 Rollingbrook Drive, Baytown, TX 77521.
