Emmett Thomas Buffington

Emmett Thomas Buffington, 80, of Pine Bluff, died at his home on Thursday morning, September 1, 2005. He was born January 20, 1925, in Bonita, Louisiana, a son of the late Alford and Grace Nugent Buffington. He was reared and received his early education in Bonita.

In 1943, he joined the United States Navy, serving in World War II. He then enlisted in the United States Army, serving from December 1947 until December 1951 during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Buffington married Miss Lillian Smith, September 13, 1945 in Bastrop, Louisiana. Mr. Buffington and his family moved to Pine Bluff in 1958, for him to work at the newly opened International Paper. He worked as an electrician until his retirement in 1985. He was a fifty year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 2033, serving as their representative for twenty years.

Mr. Buffington was a member and a past Deacon of Matthews Memorial Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in the York Rite and Scottish Rite Temples, then in 1979, he joined the Shriners. He also served as the president of the Jefferson County Trade Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Rudolf Buffington, Marvin Buffington, S.L. Buffington, Thurel Buffington, Charles Buffington, and a sister Aileen Hughes.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Buffington; two sons, Thomas Buffington of Monroe, Louisiana and Glynn Buffington of Pine Bluff; two daughters, Alice Rabb of Rison, Arkansas and Jean Flynn of Heber Springs, Arkansas; three brothers, J.B. Buffington of Haughton, Louisiana and Allen Frank Buffington and Guy Buffington both of Shreveport, Louisiana; two sisters Alice Kennedy of MerRoughe, Louisiana and Sharon Kinney of Lafayette, Louisiana; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday September 3, 2005 at 10:00 AM, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Jim Buie officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friend from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Friday at Robinson's. Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana, 71103.
