In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Vernelle Hayes Downey; 5 brothers, Elmer Downey Jr., Franklin Downey, Leon Downey, Ward Downey and W.T. Meredith; 5 sisters, Melba Downey, Grace Holmes, Lela Gordon, Nell Henry, and Ruby Barrett; his father-in-law, Vernon Hayes; his mother-in-law, Nettie Mae Hayes; and 2 brothers-in-law, Marshall Hayes and Douglas Hayes.
Thomas was raised and educated in Buffalo and Hohenwald, TN. He served in the US Army and had been called up for a second time after his initial discharge from the service. Thomas had a 38 year career with the former Bank of Goodlettsville (now Regions Bank) where he was supervisor of facilities maintenance and also a courier foir the bank. He had also owned and operated a lawncare business for 50 years and had worked for Cole & Garrett Funeral Homes.
He is survived by his daughter, five siblings and their respective spouses, a brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation for Thomas will be held at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, Goodlettsville, TN on Sunday, June 19th from 2 until 5 PM and on Monday, June 20th from 10 AM until 12 PM. A celebration of life service will be held Monday at 12 PM followed by entombment at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
