Joyce W. Simon (aka Joyce Ann Westrater, Joyce W. Kiltz) passed peacefully following a battle with Alzheimer's/dementia.

Joyce had a career as a teacher, became a mother and homemaker, co-created a successful string of eight preschools, and went on to work for the welfare department. She happily retired and lived a full life quilting, reading, practicing yoga, gardening and being a good friend to many.

Joyce grew up in Virginia, moved to New Jersey, Florida, and then Nebraska during her working years. She retired to Arkansas and finally moved to assisted living in North Carolina near family.

To the family and friends who were lucky enough to have had her in their lives, Joyce was a kind listener, the calm in our storms, the reminder that we should live with joy and that we had love enough in our hearts. She raised three children and helped to raise eight stepchildren.

Joyce was the kind of woman that made those not in her family just a little bit jealous of those of us who were. While physically petite, Joyce was huge of heart and had the ability to make those around her feel heard. If there is a kinder soul out there, we haven't met her.

She is survived by all 11 children; their spouses; 24 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by two husbands, Max B. Kiltz and Daniel J. Simon, Sr., both of whom knew how lucky they were to have had her in their corner. She is also preceded in death by four grandchildren, Max abnd Carlota Kiltz, Kale Simon, and Dana Cackowski.

A private scattering of ashes will take place along the Potomac.

Donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association.
She is greatly missed by so many.
