Character Actor. He was best-known to both television and film viewers for his numerous character roles in such films as "Boogie Nights" (1997) and "Magnolia" (1999) and such series as "Seinfeld" and "Modern Family." He was born to William Alexander Hall and Alice Birdene (McDonald) Hall on September 10, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio. He began his career as a United States Army translator in Germany and a high school teacher before pursuing a career in acting. He made his acting debut in 1970 in the film "Cowards." Besides frequently collaborating with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson in "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia," he went on to appear in such films as "Coma" (1978), "Secret Honor" (1984), "Midnight Run" (1988), "Say Anything" (1989), "Ghostbusters II" (1989), "Hard Eight" (1996), "The Rock" (1996), "Air Force One," (1997), "Buddy" (1997), "Rush Hour" (1998), "The Truman Show" (1998), "The Insider" (1999), "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999), "Cradle Will Rock" (1999), "The Contender" (2000), "Rules of Engagement" (2000), "The Sum of All Fears"(2002), "Bruce Almighty" (2003), "Dogville" (2003), "In Good Company" (2004), "Duck" (2005), "Zodiac" (2007), "Rush Hour 3" (2007), "The Chicago 8" (2011), "50/50" (2011) and "Argo" (2012). In 1975, he made his television debut in the television movie "The Last Survivors." Besides "Seinfeld" and "Modern Family," his later television credits would include "Good Times," "M*A*S*H*," "Cheers," "Emergency!," "Quincy M.E.," "Family Ties," "Falcon Crest," "Civil Wars," "The Practice," "Pasadena," "The West Wing," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Second Chance," and "Messiah."
