Lieutenant Colonel Retired, Brandy James, age 80, of South Mills, NC died peacefully at her home on June 4, 2022. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 2, 1941, to the late Albert Hamel and Elsie S. Hamel. She served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps for twenty-two years and then went to work for fifteen years for Cubic Applications, Inc.

Lt. Col. James was recognized by the U.S. Marine Corps by receiving the following awards: Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with one star; Navy Achievement Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation with one star; National Defense Service Medal with one star; Humanitarian Service Medal (Cuban Mariel Boatlift); and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one star. She was also a recipient of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce "Outstanding Professional Woman" award.

Brandy was a teacher, animal lover, mentor, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend. She was generous and often her generosity was anonymous. She cared deeply for her friends, family, and pets and wanted the best for all of them even if she had to make it happen herself.

Brandy is survived by her dog Chance and many loving great nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Blake officiating. Burial will follow at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, VA with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
