". . . Celest Leslie saw an announcement about the [Zion Hill] cemetery committee in January and volunteered because two of her ancestors are connected to Zion Hill. Her great-great-grandfather John Edmond's tombstone lies in the cemetery, while Edmond's brother, Jared Alexander is buried there. Both men fought for the Union in the Civil War, where Edmond lost the bottom part of one leg. . . . . Edmond's younger brother, was born in 1839 and died June 7, 1920. . . . . "

"Jared Alexander, a colored teamster, died at his home in Columbia, on Monday morning at 11:30 o'clock from a complication of diseased, aged 80 years. He is survived by two sons: Jerry and James, and one sister, Mrs. Sara Ann Bessick, all of Columbia. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served with Company F., 32nd Regiment, colored infantry. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Mt. Zion A. M. E. church."

NOTE: Military Records list his year of birth 1843. Census records list year of birth between 1843 to 1846.
