A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bob and Martha Atkins Higgins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J. T. Fox; daughter-in-law, Tammy McDowell Fox; three sisters: Minnie Loe Webb, Allie Renfro and Hettie Price; and three brothers: Ted Higgins, Ned Higgins and Robert Higgins, Jr.
Betty was a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church and read her Bible every day. She worked in the tax office of the Yancey County Courthouse for numerous years, and was a member of the Yancey County Board of Education. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening. Betty loved keeping track of her family, and always put everyone else first.
Surviving are two sons: Randy Fox and wife, Tammy, and Russ Fox, all of Burnsville; two grandsons: Justin Fox and wife, Tabitha, of Burnsville, and Alex Warren and fiancée, Nicole, also of Burnsville; great-grandchildren: Atalie Jaymes Fox, Kelston Noah Fox, Benjamin Warren and Jillian Warren; and special friend, Tammy Renae Cole. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A combined funeral service will be held for Betty and her husband, J.T., at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 12th at West Burnsville Baptist Church. Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the McCracken Cemetery.
