Stage and Screen Actor. At age 21 he began his career as an understudy to Bert Lahr and Joe Penner on Broadway. In 1930 he joined the Earl Carroll Vanities, a sometimes controversial Broadway revue known for burlesque comedy. He was married to Betty Rowland, the self-described "Ball of Fire" burlesque performer, touring together in the Minsky burlesque. The marriage eventually ended in divorce. As a friend of Orson Welles, he was cast in many of the director's stage and screen productions, including "Citizen Kane" (his first screen performance) eventually appearing in over 80 films with his final film, "Touch of Evil," being released a year after his death.
