Mrs. Rebecca Whitman, relict of the late Dr. Shephard Whitman, was shockingly and fatally burned about 7 o'clock yesterday evening, at her residence on Lower Second street. Mrs. W. had been unwell for several days, and yesterday evening, after taking a bath, she stooped before the fire to warm and dry herself. While in this position her clothes caught fire, and being alone at the time and too feeble to give warning to the family of Mr. Sisloff, with whom she resided, and one of whose daughters had but just left the room, before assistance reached her she was burned on the left side, breast and arm, almost to a crisp. She survived her injuries till twenty minutes past one o'clock this morning, when death put an end to her sufferings. Mrs. Whitman was one of the early pioneers of New Albany, having settled in this city over forty years ago, and was well known and highly esteemed in this community.
