COLUMBUS, GA - Thena Holt Evans Best, 88, a 45 year resident of Columbus, GA, passed away Sunday morning, June 28th, 2009, peacefully in her sleep at her family home. She charmed others with her elegant beauty, strong will, and southern grace.
She was born the only child to the late Julian and Thena Evans of Sandersville, GA where she spent her childhood days developing a rare bond that lasted her lifetime with her best friend Louise Orr of Macon, Ga.
She attended The University of Georgia from 1939 to 1941 and studied Art History. As a free spirit, she left the university and eloped to Colorado to marry her late husband, Lt. Robert Dale Best, Pilot in the United States Army Air Corp. She remained a loyal alumni throughout her life. She was a member of the ADPi sorority at UGS as well as Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was highly regarded as a loving mother and caregiver. Thena dedicated her life to the care of those she loved, including her beloved dogs and her family, especially her handicapped son Joe, whom she faithfully cared until she was in her eighties.
She was lovingly cared for by her family, especially her son, Bob, and her daughter-in-law Diana, and the wonderful people that gave her comfort in her final days.
She is survived by her four children; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
A private service will be arranged by her family for a later date according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name may be sent to the Muscogee County Humane Society.
