Jeff Miller (WB8WKQ) – Silent Key

It is with deep regret that we must announce the passing of Jeff Miller, WB8WKQ. Jeff was an avid traffic operator and a mentor to many in the traffic community. His excellent CW "fist," his professionalism, and his "big signal" were a beacon to new traffic operators. Jeff was a long-time member of the Michigan Net, QMN. In addition, Jeff was one of the founders of Radio Relay International, playing a major role in what has become a major revitalization of the traffic system resulting in greater participation and renewed respect for the radiogram and the art and skill of message handling.

In 2016, Jeff also played an important role in the successful execution of the Amateur Radio Service component of the Federal Government's Cascadia Rising disaster exercise in which the traffic system scored an impressive 99.998 percent accuracy level against over 13,000 data points in messages originated in the Western United States for delivery at the National Response Coordination Center in Washington, D.C.

In 2017, during Hurricane Maria, Jeff applied his outstanding traffic handling skills to receive and deliver over two thousand welfare messages from hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico. This accomplishment alone is an impressive example of his dedication and skill.

Jeff Miller represented the highest level of courtesy and operating standards in the Amateur Radio Service. He will be missed not only as a dedicated radio operator, but also as a friend to so many who knew him and collaborated with him.

His official obituary follows:

Jeffrey Stewart Miller, age 62, of Dryden died February 6, 2022 at the Villages of Lapeer.
