Harold graduated from West High School in Rockford, IL in 1952. He proudly served in the US Army from 1954 - 1955.
Harold married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jane (Williams) on April 7, 1956 in Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rockford. The couple had met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary!
At the time of their marriage Harold was employed by Barber Coleman but then made the move to Sundstrand where he was a product designer. His work at Sundstrand (now Danfoss) moved the family to Ames in 1973 where he continued his career in product design. Retiring in 1991 allowed the couple time to pursue their interest in travel with their RV.
The couple loved to camp and travel starting out with a rented tent evolving through the years up to a 38 ft. Holiday Rambler motorhome. Through the years they traveled to all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. They loved to share pictures and stories of their adventures with all who were interested. Harold said that his favorite trips were the ones to Alaska. They were members of the HRRV club for over 50 years and he held every officer position in the local chapter up to the National President of the club. They still keep in contact with many of their fellow Ramblers to this day.
Harold and Barb have been active and faithful members of St. John's by the Campus Episcopal Church for nearly 50 years. He was a member of the Ames Cross Trailers square dancing club, Prime Time Live, and the Ames History Museum and are supporters of Iowa PBS. He always looked forward to bandshell concerts every summer, visiting Reiman Gardens and attending Iowa State women's basketball games. During their retirement they were work campers during the summer at Adventureland for 13 years. He loved operating the rides and seeing the smiles on everyone's faces.
