She was the sister of William Wilberforce who fought for years for the abolition of slavery. Her first husband was Rev Dr Thomas Clarke,DD, vicar of Holy Trinity in Hull, where she came from.

After his death in 1797 she married James Stephen in 1800 and lived in Stoke Newington. Stephen was a lawyer and Member of Parliament and architect of the legal attack on the slave trade with his brother-in-law. She is buried with her husband, James Stephen, and her niece. Barbara Wilberforce, in St. Mary's Church Yard. They lived at Summerhouse which neighbored Fleetwood House and Abney House at Abney Park. Summerhouse stood where Summerhouse Road is located.
