Long-time Kirksville business man and civic leader, Glenn H. Estes, died Monday November 20, 1989. The son of George E. and Susie Smith Estes he was born in Center, Missouri on December 29, 1918. He graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1939 and taught school until his induction in to the U.S. Army on July 11, 1941.
In November 1942 he married Mary Margaret Shoush in Macon, Missouri. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Margaret E. Bryan; one son, Glenn H. Estes, Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Renee C. Estes and two grandsons, Benjamin B. Bryan and Christopher B. Bryan.
Mr. Estes founded Kirkaville Floral Company in 1946. He was active in professional dlorist organizations and was honored with membership in the American Academy of Florists.
He served in the U.S. Army, Missouri National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves for thirty years. He achieved the rank of Colonel. After WOrld War II he was instrumental in the re-establishment of the National Guard in Kirksville.
His participation in community affairs involved many different organizations: Kirksville Rotary Club, Adair Lodge No. 366 A.F. & A.M., Moila Temple, Chamber of Commerce, VFW and American Legion.
Mr. Estes served nine years on the Kirksville City Council and was mayor for seven of those years. He served as chairman of the Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission and as vice-chairman of the Missouri Association of Regional Planning Commissions.
A ruling elder of First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Estes was a moderator of Union Prebytery, moderator of the Synod of Mid-America and the recipient of a Devoted Service Award from Louisvile Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.
Services will be held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in Kirksville. The Rev. Kenneth Locke will officiate. Burial will be in the Maple Hills Cemetery.
Bearers will be Ron Shoush, Bill Shoush, John Bryan, Jr., David Shoush, Curtis Henry and John Strimmann
