James Tunnell, eldest child of Stephen and Kezia Money Tunnell, was born 1777 near Fredericksburg, Va. and died about 1865 at the home of a step-son, named Campbell, near Robertsville Tenn. He moved, with his parents in 1788 to Washington Co., Tenn. He married first Jane Ball 1796 and settle on Beach Creek, Hawkins Co., Tenn. She was born about 1780 and died in Hawkins Co., Tenn. She was the daughter of Moses and Mary (Harden) Ball; Moses Ball, of Penn., and one of the pioneer settlers of Hawkins Co. James Tunnell married second, a widow, Mrs. Campbell.
James Tunnell was a Baptist Minister. For fifty years he was a member of Double Springs Church. Of him Reb. J. J. Burnett in the book "Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers: says; "he was not a 'Primitive or Old School' Baptist, but like some of them would sing out his sermons, I have been told, after the approved fashion and popular and effective style of preaching in many parts of the country of that day.
Children of Rev. James Tunnell, all by first marriage, were born on Beach Creek, Hawkins Co., Tenn. "
