Leonard Bates Jr.

March 24, 1925 - August 9, 2018

Leonard Bates Jr. was the third child of six children born to the union of Leonard Bates, Sr. and Ellen (Murray) Bates on March 24, 1925 in Joliet, Illinois. Leonard departed this life on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the home of his beloved friend Ruby Grier.

Leonard graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1942. He then served in World War II. He served a mandatory two-year enlistment in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945. He was assigned to the USS ELDRIGE and then to the USS SCOTT as Captain 1st Mate. He later was promoted to communication, Grade I. Upon being honorably discharged, he began working at U.S. Steel in Gary, IN, a job he would keep 38 years.

He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Henrietta Tate of Franklinton, LA on October 27, 1956. There were no children born to this union., but in the next month they received me, Julius as promised from my mother. And so the relationship began and lasted until the Lord took my Pops home.

Later in life he and several other gentlemen of his generation formed the Beacon Club, leaving Pops as the last founding member, at the ripe age of 93. He's a lifetime member of Brown Chapel. He loved fishing, hunting, camping and bowling, which he continued to do until his health began to fail.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Sr. and Ellen Bates; his beloved wife, Henrietta (Brumfield) Bates; two brothers, Frank Lee Bates and William Henry (Lillie Mae) Bates; two sisters, Fern Ellen (Arthur) George and Elsie Mae (Arnold) Kiser.

Leonard leaves to cherish his memories: one sister, Essie Lee (Bates) Ellis of Joliet, IL; one sister-in-law, Viola Bates of Joliet, IL; one grandson/son, Julius Brumfield (Sandra) of Dallas, GA; a devoted friend and caregiver, Ruby Grier of Joliet, IL; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
