June 20, 1930 - May 28, 2022

Dr. David Scott Humphries, Sr. died 28 May 2022 at his residence in McDonough, GA. He was born 20 June 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Kenneth Fraser Humphries and wife Sarah Margaret Nichols Humphries. He lived in Whipple, WV and St. Petersburg, FL. where he obtained his elementary education. St. Andrews School, an Episcopal boarding school in Middletown, DE, provided a high-school education. He graduated in 194 7 at the age of 16. He graduated from Wake Forest College, after 3 semesters at Kenyon College, with a Chemistry major and double minor in Mathematics and Biology.

David received his Medical Doctorate from West Virginia University and Medical College of Virginia. He completed Internship at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, followed by a four year Residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.

David enlisted in the inactive Army Reserve which supported the Residency years financially, allowing for marriage and children. After his residency, he served two years in Landstuhl, Germany. David was then assigned the position of Medical Advisor to the U.S. Ambassador. On return to the States, he spent two and a half years as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Ft. Dix, NJ. He then transferred to Ft. Belvoir, VA where, after six months, he resigned from the Army.

He was employed by The Nalle Clinic in Charlotte, NC, specializing in total joint replacement and internal fixation of fractures. During this time, he established a laboratory, teaching fracture repair techniques to the Orthopaedic Residents at Atrium. This program was one of the bases of the Southeastern Fracture Symposium.

In 1976, David married Jeanette Gilbert Wakefield. This marriage has lasted until his death.

David rejoined the Army Reserves in 1974, serving as the Officer in Charge of the 3297th Hospital unit based in Charlotte. He retired from the Anny in 1990 as a Colonel. He retired from the Nalle Clinic in 1992. In January, 1993, David joined the Oweida Sports Medicine Clinic and retired from that practice in December, 1999. During this time, he also helped construct 26 homes for Habitat for Humanity, serving as crew leader and House Leader.

In 2000, David and Jeanette moved to McDonough, GA for retirement. During this "retirement," David was instrumental in the establishment of the Hands of Hope Free Medical Clinic in Henry Co., GA. He saw patients there from 2004 until 2014, serving as Medical Director from 2004 until 2009. In 2008, David was the recipient of the Thomas P. Greene Award, which was given to only six people that year. The award honors those Georgia citizens who have given exemplary service to the indigent citizens of Georgia.
