Jamie Wray Orem, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, May 30, 2022, at her home.
He was born April 22, 1934, in Rushville, the son of Wray and Joanna(Pierce)Orem. On December 19, 1954, he married his love of his life and wife of 67 years, Janet Armstrong, and she survives.
In addition to Janet, Jamie is survived by his daughter, Cristi Lynn(James)Varnes of Michiana Shores; sons, Jon Wray(Sharon)Orem, and Andrew Jamie(Tammy)Orem both of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Joshua Orem and partner, Kiley Heth, Tyler Orem, Betsy Orem, Belle Orem and Wren Orem, Brady Vanes, Zachary Vanes and fiance, Camille Veri, Maggie Vanes(Kevin)Wilday, Ben(Kaitlyn)Orem, Mitchell(Jenna)Orem, Abby(Kyle) Garner, Grace Orem, ; and great-grandchildren, Willa Orem and Louie Orem.
Jamie was preceded in death by his parents.
He graduated in 1952 from Waldron high School, he received his bachelor's degree from Franklin College and his master's degree from Butler University.
Jamie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, participated in Bible studies and served as an elder, deacon and trustee. He belonged to Promise Keepers and Men's Brotherhood.
Jamie began his career in education at Noble Township School in 1952. He served in many capacities during this time as an educator including Social Studies teacher, guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal. He retired in 1996, as principal of Shelbyville High School, with a combined 34 years of service.
Jamie was named Principal of the Year in 1997 and was also awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash award. He was a member of the Shelbyville Lions Club and served on the board for CICOA.
Before and during his time as an educator he was a lifelong farmer. Farming was a passion and way of life for Jamie. He started out milking cows before school and transitioned to raising Angus cows. He loved being on the farm and that love has been passed on to his extended family.
Jamie enjoyed family vacations, especially boating on Lake Cumberland. He also enjoyed many family adventures throughout the world with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his many dear friends.
