He attended Locust Township School. He loved farming, going camping, making crafts, and woodworking. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Russel was a member of the Grange in Numidia.
Russel is survived by three children: Vickie Johnson and husband Larry of Mifflinville, Bonnie Hess of Bloomsburg, Rickie Knorr and wife Amy of Washingtonville; five grandchildren: Larry Johnson II, Heather Johnson Kowalski, Chad Hess, Drew Hess, Darien Bridge; six great-grandchildren: Dain and Trent Kowalski, Trystan, Taylor, and Troy Johnson, and Cayson Hess; as well as two great-great-grandchildren: Blaire and Blake Kowalski; sister Ethel Sevison of Bloomsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Russel was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his wife, Coletta E. Pennington, who passed away on November 14, 2014; son-in-law Andrew Hess; and six siblings: Quentin Billig, Margaret Long, Hazel Rarig, Dorothy Billig, Geraldine Creasy and Mark Billig.
Services will be Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa, with Pastor Chris Dunlap officiating. Burial will follow at Elan Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
