It is with a heavy heart that the Long Beach City College Athletics Department announces the passing of former football and volleyball coach, Victor Gary Jacobsen.
"From an institution rich in athletic coaching icons, Coach Jake stood with all of them and added his mark of excellence. Synonymous with LBCC Football and Volleyball for decades, Jake impacted the lives of countless student athletes," said Athletic Director Randy Totorp. "As a fierce competitor and educator, he will be missed tremendously."
Jacobsen was brought to Long Beach City College (LBCC) by former LBCC head coach Jim Stangeland. In football, Jacobsen was head coach for six seasons and served as an assistant coach for 23 years. During that time, he helped lead LBCC to six conference championships, eight bowl games, one state title, and the 1995 national championship.
He was a standout men's and women's volleyball coach at LBCC. He also spent 12 years as the men's volleyball coach during his 39-year career at the college. Five of his teams reached the state championship match, with three teams winning California titles in 1980, 1982, and 1985, and five conference titles (1980, 1981, 1882, 1985, and 1987). Jacobsen was named conference volleyball coach of the year six times as well as state volleyball coach of the year three times.
From 1991-96, Jacobsen coached the USA-ASD girls' volleyball team, a squad comprised of elite female players 19 years old and under, in competition in China, Japan, and Australia. In 2009, he was inducted into the Hall of Champions at Long Beach City College.
Before coming to LBCC, Jacobsen attended Orange Coast College and received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Whittier College. Jacobsen was an all-conference selection in football at Orange Coast and Whittier.
Jacobsen leaves behind his wife, Diana, and four children: Kirk, Karen, Brek and Denise.
