Carla was born on February 25, 1950 to Benjamin E Spence Sr. and Betty Clair Kelly Spence in Patuxent River, Maryland. She considered coastal North Carolina home but felt strongly connected to Pennsylvania, where her brothers, sisters, and extended family members live.
In 1969 Carla and Phillip Terry Reed were married and went on to have three children, Christine Rene Reed, Patrick Ryan Reed, and Laurie Ann Reed. She was a devoted mother and always put her children first. Carla found great happiness in spending time with her four grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She never missed the opportunity to celebrate with them and always made them feel loved and special.
Carla loved an ocean breeze and the white sandy beaches. She found peace and sanctuary in her trips to the beach. She loved to stroll the shore and collect shells and shark's teeth. Carla's love for the beach is a memory we will not forget.
Carla spent some of her free time enjoying sports, particularly college sports. She enjoyed watching games in person, as well as on tv. She cheered for her favorite teams and usually asked "Did you watch the game last night?" Carla herself played softball for many years up into her 40s. She played the position of shortstop and pitcher, and she was good!
Carla was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin E Spence Sr. and Betty Claire Spence.
She is survived by daughter Christine R. Evans (Chris Evans), son Patrick Reed (Wendy Reed), daughter Laurie Reed, sister Lynn Spence (Barbara Stough), brother Benjamin E. Spence (Sarah Spence), sister Julie S. Moran (Edward Moran), brother William Kelly Spence (M. Ann Spence), brother Gary Spence (Sherry Spence), brother Scott Spence, and longtime friend Sheila Foy.
Carla's grandchildren are Christopher Reed (spouse Madison Reed), Erika Evans, Kara Evans, and Carly Allen.
The family requests flowers be sent to Jones Funeral Home at 303 Chaney Ave, Jacksonville, North Carolina 28540.
