Charles Reed "Chase" Higgins, 29, of Harpers Ferry, WV, passed away in the care of Berkeley Medical Center on February 23, 2022 after a hard fought battle that started with a COVID-19 diagnosis.

On February 3, 2022 an article of Chase's experience while at Berkeley Medical Center was on the front page of a local newspaper, The Journal. This article was focused solely on the 54 days Chase had spent in the hospital at the time it was posted. Chase continued to fight for another 22 days before he passed away. The family received a large amount of support from the community offering kind thoughts, prayers, and even sharing similar stories. We, the family, feel it is very important to share Chase's real story, the story outside of a COVID-19 diagnosis, the story of an amazing young man who lived his life to the fullest for the all of his 29 years.

Chase was born on October 18, 1992 to Kelle Bryant and Ray Higgins in Dale City, Virginia.

As a very young child Chase, his sister, brother and mother all moved to Harpers Ferry, WV. Shortly thereafter, Kelle re-married to Mike Bryant whom also had three children similar in age. The family was quickly known as the "Higgins-Bryant Brady Bunch". Though all the kids are now grown, the legacy continues.

Living in a home with five other siblings all within a few years apart, you are bound to find different ways to entertain yourself. Chase was always up for a good ol' wrestling match with his brothers and sisters. This passion for wrestling with friends and family led him to discover his love for the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Chase played football at Jefferson High School and graduated in 2010. He attended Shepherd University where he studied history and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2016.

Chase was naturally remarkably smart. Without studying for his SATs, Chase scored within the top 5% on his first try. He was a master of all board games and trivia questions. Whether it was related to history, politics, information technology, computers, coding, or gaming he was always eager to share his knowledge with any one that was willing to listen.

He also had amazing artistic skills. The art he would create was incredible. Many friends and family often referred to him as a Lyrical Genius. He could write rap lyrics better than some of the professionals.

Chase had an incredible ability to make people laugh. His laugh alone was extremely contagious. He had a knack for comedy and thrived in any opportunity to put on costume. Not a single time did Chase disappoint when a costume was involved.

Furthermore, Chase loved the outdoors and thrived in just about every water activity possible. He enjoyed calming activities like paddle boarding, floating on a pontoon, and kayaking. However, he was also an adrenaline junky. The bigger the rapid, the better when it came to rafting. He also dreamed of scuba diving with the biggest sharks he could find.

Lastly, as Chase got older, his passion for traveling to big cities and indulging in good food also grew. He would spend a significant amount of time researching the best food places around the country and he would plan trips specifically to go to those locations. He always had the best stories when he returned home.

Now that Chase is with the Lord, the planning needed for these "trips" are a little different. He can now go wherever his spirit desires without any limitations. The family finds comfort knowing he will be with the Lord the entire way. Chase will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

Chase is survived by his loving mother, Kelle Bryant and husband, Mike of Harpers Ferry; father, Ray Higgins and wife, Shelby of Staunton, VA; two sisters, Tyler Dunham and husband, J.W. and Raykelle Higgins; three brothers, M Treynor Higgins, John Bryant and Stella and Patrick Bryant; grandparents, Reed and Charlie Reavis, grandmother, Judy Bryant and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Chase was preceded in death by grandparents, Mike and Jeanette Treynor and grandfather, John Bryant.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 10:00 am at St James Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV with Father Bill Kuchinsky, Father Michael Francis Bryant and Deacon Dave Galvin.

The family will receive friends at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV on Friday, March 11, 2022 from 5-8 pm. A vigil will be held at 7:00 pm.
