Dad was born in Gastonia NC on March 31, 1933 to Charlie and Rosetta Matthews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Bobby Albert Matthews and son, Donald Eugene Matthews.
Coyt served 4 years with the US Air Force as a Fire Fighter stationed in several locations including Orlando and Tampa Florida and Greenland Denmark. After leaving service he joined the City of Gastonia as a Firefighter where he retired after 26 years. He was a member of Gastonia Mason Lodge #369 and just received his 60-year Diamond Jubilee Certificate as Master Mason. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church. He enjoyed deer hunting, deep sea fishing and camping. He and Pat spent many years at Green Mountain Campground in Lenoir, Steel Creek Campground in Morgantown, and Lake Hickory Campground in Hickory NC, where they made many precious memories and good friends. He was a co-owner of a Crate Late Model Dirttrack Racecar. After retirement Coyt worked many years at Firestone Jewelry and Pawn Shop and on the weekends sold Tools at the Gastonia 321 Flea Market where he was known as the Toolman.
Coyt is survived by his wife Patricia Jordan Matthews, their daughters and their husbands Kim Guthrie (George Bryan) and Debbie Shires (Gene). Their sons Greg Matthews (Mary Ann) and Steve Matthews (Renee).
He is also survived by his grandchildren Kyle Jones, Matt and Hunter Shires, Dustin Matthews, Elizabeth M Tuber, Angela M Simons, Casey Guthrie, Jess Wallace, and Amy Ryley. His great grandchildren Austin and Colton Jones, Kadence Shires, Sophie Guthrie, Chloe, Caylee, and Cohen Matthews, Douglas, Thomas and Kaeden Tuper, Ashlynn Wallace, Zander, Payton and Finley Simmons, Aaron and Jakob Ryley.
The family received friends on Wednesday June 1 with a Celebration of Life following at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home in Gastonia NC. A full Firemen's Funeral was held with Honor Guard and Fireman Pallbearers. The casket was ridden on an Antique Firetruck to Gaston Memorial Park.
