Obituary
Richard Longino, 63, former professional wrestler By Michael Browning. Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Richard Longino, a former i professional wrestler who was profiled recently in the Accent section of The Palm Beach Post, died after a brief illness last Friday. He was 63.
Mr. Longino wrested in Atlanta from 1961 until 1965 as part of the tag team known as the Assassins, a masked duo who wore red-and-black costumes and posed as villains in the ring. By day, Mr. Longino worked as a baggage handler at Atlanta International Airport and was proud of his "physique: 22-inch biceps, a 54-inch chest, a 32-inch waist and 30 inch thighs. "Women used to come up to me and ask if they could feel my arms," he recalled in an interview with The Post. Mr. Longino also worked as a luxury car salesman and truck driver in Texas, where he suffered a near-fatal accident in 1984, which broke his neck in three places and fractured his skull. Toward the end of his life, he suffered several strokes and used a wheelchair at the Darcy Hall nursing home, but recalled his wrestling days as his happiest. Behind the snarl and swagger Mr. Longino in the ring, Mr. Longino was "a sweet man," his sister, Marty Snyder of West Palm Beach, said. "I had to quit going to matches because I couldn't take the way the fans were abusing him." He is also survived by his mother, Charlotte P. Bryant of West Palm Beach; his daughter, Mamie Antoinette Steenioff of Austin, Texas, and a son, Russell Longino of Houston. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dorsey Funeral Home of Lake Worth. Mr. Longino will be buried in Georgia.
