Judith Armstead Hawkins Barton (Judy) passed away Wednesday May 25, 2022 at Hughes Home of Virginia following a long illness. Judy was born in Fredericksburg on February 26, 1939. She was the only child of Aubrey and Constance Hawkins. Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Cline Dwight Barton, Jr.

She was a graduate of James Monroe High School and received her B.S. in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia. She also earned a B.L.S. in Historic Preservation from Mary Washington College.

She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church for many years.

Judy was a nurse for 40 years and began her nursing career in Charlottesville in 1961 working for Albemarle County Public Health Agency and later University of Virginia Hospital. She also worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Princeton Hospital in Princeton, New Jersey, Zurbrugg Memorial Hospital in Riverside, New Jersey. In Fredericksburg, she worked at the Fredericksburg Nursing Home, in private practice with Dr. W.W. Butzner and Mary Washington Hospital. After retirement from Mary Washington Hospital, she worked at Culpeper Hospital and as an adjunct professor in the nursing program at Germanna Community College.

Judy was a true lover oh historic preservation and she and Cline lovingly restored their Lewis Street home in Fredericksburg during the late 1970's which was featured on the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation's Candlelight Tour on two different occasions.

She was appointed by the Fredericksburg City Council to the Old Stone Warehouse team and was a volunteer at the Fredericksburg Area Museum. She and Cline both were members of the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. (HFFI). Additionally, Judy was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Overwharton Parish, and served as Regent from 1996-2001.

Judy was survived by her three daughters.. She is also survived by her son, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her family wishes to acknowledge the loving care given by the staff of Hughes Home of Virginia and Hospice of Mary Washington Healthcare.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at St. George's Episcopal Church at 10:30amwith burial immediately following at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her honor to the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. or to St. George's Episcopal Church Memorial Trust Fund.
