He married Gertrude Hardman, 19 Aug 1903, in North Shade, Gratiot County, Michigan. After her death in 1916 he married Florence M. Hardman, 24 Jan 1917.

OBITUARY

Z.D. Rule was born Nov. 19, 1869 in Woodbury, Ohio and passed away at his home in Crystal, Mich., July 18, 1951. He moved to Michigan at the age of eleven with his parents, where they lived on a farm in Gratiot County near Middleton. He attended Ferris Institute and later taught school for several years, after which he worked at the carpenter trade for a few years. In July, 1898, he enlisted in Company H, 35th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry. and was mustered out the following Spring. In July, 1899, he enlisted in Company C, 30th Regiment, United States Volunteers for service in the Philippines and went out as a Sergeant. In 1903 Mr. Rule was united in Marrigage to Miss Gertrude Hardman, who preceded him in death Decemberr 21, 1916. In 1910 Mr. Rule came to Crystal where he bought a general merchandise store which he ran for many years. In January 1917, Mr. Rule was united in marriage to Florence M. Hardman. To this union were five children, three daughters and two sons. Mr. Rule was Supervisor of Crystal Township for several years, Township Clerk and a member of the School board. He was a member of the Joy Lodge No. 298, I.O.O.F., Mt. Gilead Lodge No. 285, F. & A. M., Veterans of foreign Wars and United Spanish War Veterans. He leaves to mourne his passing, his widow Mrs. Florence Rule; three daughters Mrs. Gertrude Bowen of Crystal, Mrs. Rhea Lewis of St. Ignatius, Montana, and Mrs. Gladys Jefferies of Seattle, Washington; two sons Carlton of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Lloyd, serving with the United States armed forces; one half brother, Wm. Rule of Alma, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held Sunday, July 22, 1951 at the Crystal Congregational Church, with Rev. Albert Beard and Rev. Clark Adams oficiating. Interment was made in Payne Cemetery, Gratiot County.
