Anna Lucia Seal, age 89, Mother, Sister, Grandmother Great Grandmother, and friend departed on Monday, December 16, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on May 22, 1930 in Lockhart, Texas to Martin and Carmen (Tamayo) Valdez.
Lucy was an accomplished and gifted woman who led an incredible life. Ms. Seal received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1955. She then joined the nursing staff at Methodist Hospital as the supervisor of intensive care services. While there, she pioneered in the development of cardiovascular nursing while working with Drs. Michael DeBakey an Denton Cooley, where she played a key role in post-operative cardiovascular care for patients. Later, she continued her nursing career in teaching and service capacities in several hospitals and universities specializing in care of patients with heart disease. Additionally, she lectured all over the U.S. to Nursing teams on how to begin ICU's and execute the principles of Cardiovascular Nursing.
She published two books and several articles related to cardiovascular care. She held the position of President of Seton School of Nursing Alumnae Association and participated on the scholarship committee. Lucy was also an entrepreneur, a trait she gained from her entrepreneurial father, owning her own store The Stuffed Seal.
Lucy was the first registered nurse to be appointed on the on the Board of Directors for the Texas Heart Association. She was an avid organizer of people and causes. She led the training and development of classes to teach CPR to Executives, Professionals and the public. Outside of her nursing career, she was president of Juvenile Opportunity Endeavor or J.O.E. which assisted the Probation Department with troubled youth.
Lucy also lead an active social life, having a close circle of friend's wherever she lived. She was a selfless individual always aiding and supporting others. Even during her time with cancer she was a person of courage and showed others that cancer does not define you.
She was an independent woman who accomplished goals with style and grace all on her own. She went out in the world with a passionate mission to serve others and not be served. She lived alone until the end refusing to have anyone care for her. She remained independent until she passed.
Lucy loved to cook and was a gourmet cook specializing in many different ethnic cuisines. A few of her specialties were enchiladas, spoon bread, and all kinds of desserts. One of her best desserts was a 7-layer German chocolate cake. She held amazing dinner parties for friends and families and she personally prepared all the food for her events.
As a mother, Lucy instilled in her children, a strong love of faith, helping others and giving back through community work. Lucy led by example, she had a strong work ethic, refusing to never give up until she succeeded. These were skills she applied in her fight against cancer.
She loved being a grandmother and a great grandmother. Her grandchildren adored her and enjoyed a number of activities from playing games to being chased through the long hallways of her home.
She instilled a sense of justice and a love of community. Her smile was infectious, causing others to smile in unison. She was a beautiful woman, a loving wife and mother.
Lucy will be greatly missed and always adored.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oren Seal; parents, Martin and Carmen Valdez and brother, Jimmy Valdez. Lucy is survived by her siblings, Carlos Valdez, Agnes Williamson (Husband, Rob) and Dan Valdez; son, Mark Seal (Wife, Jené), daughter, Bridget Cornelius; grandchildren, Colin Seal, Ashley Bunch, Danielle Bunch, Nicholas Seal and Mary Elizabeth Seal; great-grandchildren, Gunner Bunch and Keaton Seal.
