She is survived by her children Gloria Smartt (Phil, deceased) of Chattanooga, TN, and Reginald Rose (Janet) of Hoover, AL; her nine grandchildren, Deseret Ward, Lanny Smartt, Jared Smartt, Celeste Ward, Ammon Smartt, Jarom Smartt, Sara Thurgood, Emily Rose, and Lauren Gardner; 35 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Peter Jefferson Limbaugh (1880-1953) and Kate Green (Stone) Limbaugh; her first husband, Fred Rose (1924-1994), and second husband, Halva Lindsey; her eight brothers and four sisters; and her grandson.
Sara was born on October 31st, 1925 in Birmingham, AL, and grew up in the McElwain area formerly known as "Log Town."
The ninth of 13 children, Sara learned early the values of hard work and service that would shape the rest of her long and full life.
She graduated from Shades Cahaba High School in 1943 and would work for BellSouth until 1984 when she retired as a manager for the first data library established in the state of Alabama.
She married Fred Rose in 1945 and gave birth to Gloria in 1946 and Reginald in 1947. She then married Halva Lindsey in 1975.
Sara's grandchildren remember her as a champion Uno, Skip-Bo, Checkers, and Connect Four player whose door was always open for a sleep-over, who was ready to walk to K-Mart for a candy bar or McDonald's for an afternoon lunch, who taught them to ride their bicycles, shell pecans and string beans, and make the world's best egg salad.
Sara enjoyed traveling to new and exciting destinations, including Hawaii, Alaska, and the Mediterranean. She was a frequent companion on family trips to Florida beaches, Walt Disney World, and learned to snow ski at the age of 66.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sara served in a number of administrative positions as well as her local family history library for many years.
In 1997 she served a two-year mission in Salt Lake City at the largest genealogical library in the world. Her life was marked by her service and generosity. Sara's phone was always ringing, and she was always quick to respond with strong hands and a willing heart. She will forever live on as an example to her progeny of the life and mission of Jesus Christ, having spent her life in the service of the friends and neighbors whom she loved as He does.
